00:03:05 trixisowned: just got banned for posting that in #bitcoin

00:03:05 trixisowned: :P

00:03:47 assbot: Last 3 lines bashed and pending review. ( http://dpaste.com/37TPQFP.txt )

00:03:47 BingoBoingo: !b 3

00:04:16 mircea_popescu: who's that ?

00:04:22 trixisowned: andreas

00:04:24 trixisowned: who else

00:04:25 trixisowned: ahahaha

00:04:30 mircea_popescu: !up Flerb

00:04:50 mircea_popescu: oh the neobee shill ?

00:04:58 nubbins`: i have about 50% success posting comments to fraudsters

00:05:00 mircea_popescu: what, is he reduced to shoe on head type of work now ?

00:05:02 dignork: and what's with the hammer?

00:05:05 mircea_popescu: nubbins` srsly that bad ?

00:05:08 nubbins`: i try to be as non-robotty as possible, but.. shrug

00:05:14 nubbins`: it eventually lets me

00:05:20 nubbins`: sometimes takes like 3-4 tries

00:05:28 nubbins`: sometimes i just give up :0

00:05:30 mircea_popescu: well this sucks.

00:05:34 dignork: nubbins`: are you running over tor?

00:05:37 nubbins`: no

00:05:54 nubbins`: tor is for weenies

00:06:00 mircea_popescu: 12 here.

00:06:23 mircea_popescu: tor shouldn't really do anything

00:06:39 nubbins`: i'd ask you how it identifies bots, but y'know

00:06:52 mircea_popescu: not a secret, i even published the code.

00:06:55 nubbins`: o?

00:07:07 mircea_popescu: there's a hidden form field based on your ip

00:07:25 mircea_popescu: (bots don't load the page on the same pass as they fill the comments - they use spiders, like google)

00:07:39 mircea_popescu: and other than that, it looks that you took at least a few seconds to type your comment in

00:08:26 nubbins`: i do occasionally write up comments in a text editor & paste em in

00:08:49 *: nubbins` is an accidental enter-presser ;(

00:09:23 nubbins`: Blazedout419 nice coin

00:09:54 mircea_popescu: well that'd do it then.

00:11:27 Flerb: So do I need OTC ratings to talk?

00:11:48 nubbins`: you need to be in assbot's trust network in order to voice yourself

00:11:50 nubbins`: ;;ident

00:12:24 mircea_popescu: Flerb i linked you above to the explanation. did you read it ?

00:12:29 Flerb: Yeah

00:12:40 mircea_popescu: so, yeah, you need ratings from the people that are in the magic list.

00:12:49 Flerb: Ok

00:12:56 Flerb: But ratings surely are for trades?

00:13:01 nubbins`: ratings are for trust

00:13:05 Flerb: Oh

00:13:15 nubbins`: this can be for trades, for back rubs, for business dealings, etc

00:13:42 mircea_popescu: everything is a trade.

00:13:50 Flerb: Oh ok

00:13:57 Flerb: So I'll register with otc

00:14:20 mircea_popescu: nubbins` i made the conditions less draconic.

00:14:24 mircea_popescu: let me know if it's still a pain.

00:14:34 decimation: also of mild interest: http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1323476 << seems intel isn't delivering 14 nm for anything important in the near future

00:14:35 assbot: Intel Outlines 14nm, Broadwell | EE Times

00:14:37 nubbins`: will do. let me know if you get more comment spam!

00:14:47 mircea_popescu: i never get any anyway :)

00:14:53 Flerb: Why is this necessary? Was there a lot of spam?

00:15:06 mircea_popescu: Flerb it's to oppress people.

00:15:11 nubbins`: now if only you could get rid of the pingbacks ;D

00:15:17 Flerb: Oh cool

00:15:25 Flerb: I love oppression

00:15:32 mircea_popescu: decimation yeah it was kinda dead in the water 14nm

00:15:38 nubbins`: you'll fit in here

00:17:57 RagnarDanneskjol: from what i understand, @ 16-14nm existing foundry tools just don't cut it (literally) to get any effective performance yield

00:20:17 mircea_popescu: yup

00:20:21 decimation: yeah these features are ~30 Si atoms in size, not surprising that photo-lithography is failing

00:20:35 BingoBoingo: Architectures are about to get exotic again

00:20:52 mircea_popescu: it's the end of that accursed law, we can get back to humanity for a while.

00:20:59 mircea_popescu: until wetware, is my bet.

00:21:32 RagnarDanneskjol: oh yea

00:22:01 mircea_popescu: holy shit. ipads ARENT MULTITASKING !?

00:22:05 mircea_popescu: dude. jesus. omfg.

00:22:15 asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: it's a normal unix box

00:22:28 asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: but apple's first version of os didn't support user task switching

00:22:30 mircea_popescu: then why does everything stop the moment it goes to background ?

00:22:38 mircea_popescu: hm.

00:22:55 decimation: the capability to shrink dies has far outstripped the capability to design logic to exploit the new possibility space

00:23:09 asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: as i recall, it uses an evil semi-cooperative task scheduler for user apps (vs system daemons) where 'non-essential' threads are suspended

00:23:32 asciilifeform: this, according to the dev manual, is to save battery charge.

00:23:35 kakobrekla: this thing was introduced in the later models only ?

00:23:58 mircea_popescu: asciilifeform so basically... it doesn't have multi-tasking.

00:24:00 asciilifeform: running more than one user app simultaneously was introduced in ver. 4 i think.

00:24:17 asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: it does, but app has to explicitly ask for it

00:24:21 decimation: I'm sure the hand of steve was in this

00:24:29 BingoBoingo: kakobrekla> this thing was introduced in the later models only ? << This thing was introduced when they "introduced" "multi-tasking"

00:24:30 mircea_popescu: sooo basicalllllllyyyyy....

00:24:36 asciilifeform: so, for instance, streaming audio apps can play in background

00:24:43 mircea_popescu: whgat the fuck am i going to do, run ipad gcc and make the app ask ?

00:24:55 asciilifeform: what's the app in question

00:25:16 mircea_popescu: various random games. i got a tablet to check out what's going on in that space.

00:25:19 asciilifeform: if it ought to do something useful in background and doesn't, it is the author's fault, yes

00:25:23 mircea_popescu: turns out... everything downloads in a patch-needed state

00:25:29 mircea_popescu: and everything takes > 10 minutes to patch

00:25:36 mircea_popescu: and everything wants to be front-up while doing this

00:25:41 mircea_popescu: and i think i am going to buy a hammer.

00:26:41 BingoBoingo: I'd be interested in partnering with someone to startup S.MASH

00:26:47 *: asciilifeform owns one of virtually every basic type of portable tablet/reader gizmo, they each have some use

00:26:48 BingoBoingo: !s s.mash

00:26:48 assbot: 4 results for 's.mash' : http://search.bitcoin-assets.com/?q=s.mash

00:26:55 mircea_popescu: and this leaving aside the problem that every shithead from vietnam to shangshitland is making the same dumbass 3 or 4 games, with the most ridiculous mechanics,

00:27:10 decimation: plus 'ipad gcc' (xcode) only runs on a mac, and you have to tell apple why you want it (not that it would help without the app source)

00:27:14 mircea_popescu: but that notwithstanding, it's apparently impossible to get any of these aspiring "software houses" to even pick up the phone.

00:27:28 asciilifeform: 'nexus 10', for example, is just right for reading vintage djvu scans of 'наука и жизнь'.

00:27:29 mircea_popescu: we've created a fine empire of cacophonic nonsense, i tell you. such victory of civilisation ;/

00:27:32 BingoBoingo: I imagine most of them can't afford phones

00:27:41 decimation: ascii do you have one of those huge sony e-ink readers?

00:27:54 asciilifeform: decimation: amazon's 'kindle dx'

00:28:03 asciilifeform: used exclusively for russian war3z

00:28:10 decimation: yeah, sony was going to be paper sized

00:28:18 mircea_popescu: i literally was confronted with obviously the same one (stupid) thing, once with a scantily clad "mobster" girl, then later with a scantily clad "medieval fantasy" girl.

00:28:21 decimation: or bigger actually, I think they bailed on that business

00:28:23 BingoBoingo: The Sony readers were basically warez text only, it was great

00:28:26 asciilifeform: sony did the original 'prs' box (sold mine for less than cost of shipping years ago)

00:28:31 asciilifeform: but has fallen down since

00:28:47 asciilifeform: dx, if i recall, is sadly out of production

00:29:52 decimation: http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/27/sony-13-inch-digital-paper-e-ink/

00:29:52 assbot: Sony's 13-inch 'Digital Paper' is just like paper, except it costs $1,100

00:30:19 *: asciilifeform hates epaper touch screens as a concept

00:30:29 decimation: my bid for such a device is $100

00:30:33 nubbins`: <+decimation> plus 'ipad gcc' (xcode) only runs on a mac, and you have to tell apple why you want it << you have to tell apple why you want xcode?

00:30:34 asciilifeform: can't finger-scroll on it, so only thing that happens is dirt

00:30:52 decimation: nubbins`: at least in the past you had to get a developer account

00:30:56 *: nubbins` shakes head

00:31:05 nubbins`: you need a developer account to load apps onto your idevice, sure

00:31:10 asciilifeform: decimation: afaik you still do if you want to actually run your code on (uncracked) apple portable gizmos

00:31:13 nubbins`: xcode itself is just a general ide. totally free

00:31:49 decimation: yeah they don't charge you for xcode but you still need to sign up afaik

00:31:49 nubbins`: you could use it to build eulora for your mac if you wanted

00:31:52 nubbins`: nah

00:32:23 decimation: asciilifeform: yeah if you want to actually ship your code, you have to submit your source to apple for approval

00:32:30 asciilifeform: and pay.

00:32:35 decimation: apple: usg dept of shiny things

00:32:46 asciilifeform: although last i checked - only binaries

00:33:01 dignork: nubbins`: last time I tried, i had to root the phone and patch the xcode to avoid dev license

00:33:32 nubbins`: we're talking about two different things here

00:33:48 decimation: asciilifeform: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3186648/does-apple-view-the-actual-source-code-when-approving-apps << you are right, they just scan binaries

00:33:49 assbot: iphone - Does apple view the actual source code when approving apps? - Stack Overflow

00:33:50 nubbins`: yes, you need a developer account ($99) to install code to your ipad or iphone

00:34:11 nubbins`: no, you do not need anything except *maybe* an itunes account to download and use xcode

00:34:19 BingoBoingo: ;;rate RagnarDanneskjol 2 Thinks, enthusiastic

00:34:19 *: asciilifeform developed for 'ipad' once, a long time ago.

00:34:20 gribble: Rating entry successful. Your rating for user RagnarDanneskjol has changed from 1 to 2.

00:34:26 *: nubbins` developed for ipad once as well

00:34:37 *: asciilifeform gave up in disgust, didn't finish

00:34:42 decimation: ;;rate asciilifeform 2 engineer of many things

00:34:43 gribble: Rating entry successful. Your rating of 2 for user asciilifeform has been recorded.

00:34:46 *: nubbins` paid for ipad with sales from two apps :/

00:34:47 mircea_popescu: well if anyone knows any of these twerps that keep spitting out pointless, copycat ipad games,

00:34:49 mircea_popescu: make a connection.

00:34:53 nubbins`: objective-c is gnarly

00:34:53 decimation: asciilifeform: what did you think of objective C?

00:35:07 nubbins`: i actually know a brilliant objective-c programmer

00:35:16 asciilifeform: decimation: not a fan. abuse of poor c, just like cpp

00:35:30 decimation: yeah I would put them in the same category (c++ and objc)

00:35:31 nubbins`: he's been getting a lot of work doing interactive media displays for big corps and stuff lately

00:35:32 RagnarDanneskjol: is he for hire? - I got jobs need fillin

00:35:47 mircea_popescu: lol ragnar's gonna build an empire here

00:35:56 nubbins`: RagnarDanneskjol he probably is and you probably can't afford him

00:36:10 decimation: I never really understood why structs and function pointers weren't enough for someone to build all the "objects" they desired

00:36:10 RagnarDanneskjol: ha

01:16:22 decimation: I love this distinction between proper police who serve the king, the local baron's agents, and the "democratic police". I'm going to use the phrase more often.

01:18:44 mircea_popescu: <decimation> yeah amateur radio would be much more fun if there were people to talk to other than hams << like what, 19/f/cali accidentally on the transmission ?

01:19:16 BingoBoingo: mircea_popescu: That could be a charity, 19 year old Cali girls on 10 meters

07:40:35 MolokoDeck: ok. so it handles both pre-encrypted and plaintext documents.

07:41:19 MolokoDeck: authentication test from a single-point trusted registry.

07:42:22 MolokoDeck: insertion of validation hash onto the bitcoin block chain with a transaction: requires use of the bitcoind API or connection to the bitcoin mining network.

07:43:01 BigBitz: mircea_popescu I like LastPass, actually :)

07:43:08 MolokoDeck: also requires the bot to have a wallet.

07:43:31 RagnarDanneskjol: nothing to do with inserting hash to bitcoin

07:43:53 MolokoDeck: am I reading the same thing you are?

07:43:55 RagnarDanneskjol: and not necessarily running bitcoind / wallet. i will let mircea elaborate

07:44:01 RagnarDanneskjol: yes

07:44:06 MolokoDeck: "2. all the valid deeds received in a specified interval, say 512 seconds, are appended together, hashed, and the resulting hash is inserted into a bitcoin transaction, which becomes part of the bitcoin blocchain."

07:44:12 mircea_popescu: RagnarDanneskjol more or less.

07:44:33 mircea_popescu: MolokoDeck hey there.

07:44:49 MolokoDeck: hello.

07:45:03 mircea_popescu: yes, only the hash.

07:46:01 MolokoDeck: the bot has to buffer state and monitor for validations, which could take tens of minutes, then inform the irc channel, and update the central web logs for public notice.

07:46:37 BigBitz: mircea_popescu you're trying to create some new bot? what purpose?

07:46:49 mircea_popescu: tis in teh logs.

07:47:29 assbot: #bitcoin-assets log

07:47:39 BigBitz: thanks RagnarDanneskjol.

07:48:31 MolokoDeck: the block of documents gets cryptosigned with a hash of the documents inside. That hash gets sent to the blockchain. The other validation (initial validation) is of the cryptosignature on each document. The documents have to be legit before they go into the bundle that get's logged and recorded permenently as a hash on the blockchain.

07:48:46 MolokoDeck: so I overloade the term "validate".

07:48:49 MolokoDeck: overloaded.

07:49:23 MolokoDeck: the blockchain is being used to make an immutable public record of the authenticating hash of the document bundle being published.

07:51:03 MolokoDeck: since the hash is inserted as a comment in the blockchain, I think one might be able to create bogus blocks that have the same has by inserting a salt and mining a single hash here.

07:51:06 MolokoDeck: lemme think about that.

07:51:34 MolokoDeck: you can't change the hash, but you could make any block match the hash, possibly, if you had enough mining time.

07:52:46 BigBitz: Negative.

07:52:53 MolokoDeck: it wouldn't be on the central trusted registry though, but that may not be entirely secure. or someone would have to check an document the recieved by another channel against the central registry or website.

07:53:00 BigBitz: the nonce, at best, you could influence.

07:53:01 MolokoDeck: ok. am I clueless?

07:53:07 BigBitz: the block hash you cannot influence (AFAIK)

07:53:20 MolokoDeck: right, you'd dither the nonce until you got some other block to match the hash.

07:53:31 BigBitz: heh, I may be clueless, but I don't think a miner can influence the hash value of the clock.

07:53:33 MolokoDeck: oh nevermind. It would have to match the ENTIRE hash. megayears. ok. i get it.

07:53:34 BigBitz: err block.

07:53:39 BigBitz: Yup - correct.

07:53:46 BigBitz: If they had some quantums, maybe :P

07:54:47 MolokoDeck: I'm not sure there's a quantum algorith for SHA256 that's particularly leveraged, but there are supposedly turing-complete quantum gate computers that could accellerate that. Let's not go into that.

07:55:00 MolokoDeck: those don't exist yet at any meaningful scale.

07:55:09 BingoBoingo: lol, There was an optical computing conversation this week...

07:56:15 BigBitz: so call me maybe?

07:57:36 mircea_popescu: <MolokoDeck> right, you'd dither the nonce until you got some other block to match the hash. << the nonce isn't actually large enough

07:57:39 BingoBoingo: I just met you, this is crazy. Here's my weiner. So blow me baby.

07:57:44 MolokoDeck: doable in php or python. php has a fairly bad reputation in cryptocurrency lately. And in computer science for different reasons (you can't predict the outcome of certain operations).

07:57:45 mircea_popescu: you'd need a nonce as large as the keyspace of the hash

07:57:58 MolokoDeck: also in php one would either have to use a package or use system calls to do the encryption.

07:58:03 MolokoDeck: I've done it that way.

07:58:39 MolokoDeck: I was wondering about that. I'm not clear on how much influence a nonce has on hash outcomes. so that explains that question.

07:58:55 BigBitz: none is only 32 bit field.

07:59:18 BigBitz: nonce. man. my typing is getting bad in my older years.

07:59:30 MolokoDeck: I was considering just adding an arbirary number of bits to the bogus message.

08:00:11 MolokoDeck: anyway, I think you've settled my question about the feasibility/non-feasibility of spoofing a single hash.

08:01:09 MolokoDeck: the security of the bot sending something via bitcoin api ... still thinking about that.

08:02:12 MolokoDeck: is this for everyone in the world to use, or only for a select community of presumable trusted parties?
